Anaerobic Digestion

What is Anaerobic Digestion?

Natural energy from waste productsAnaerobic Digestion

Anaerobic digestion is the natural breakdown of organic materials, such as food waste and farm waste, into methane / carbon dioxide gas and fertiliser. This innovative treatment is an ideal way for agricultural and industrial businesses to recycle waste and reduce their carbon footprint too.

Energy efficient

The end result of the process produces both a re-usable biogas and digestate material. The biogas contains methane and is a source of renewable energy which can be used to power electricity generators or provide heat.

Another bi-product, after further processing, is use as vehicle fuel or providing gas for cooking or heating.

How does it work?

The process takes place inside an anaerobic digester, a large sealed vessel in which bacteria act without oxygen. Natural biomass materials, such as slurry, manure, sewage sludge and food waste are heated up and as a result break down naturally.

Who uses anaerobic digestion?

The digestate material can be used as soil conditioner and fertiliser. Which makes anaerobic digestion a really effective way to recycle and re-use waste materials.
